HISTORY
Martin Luther King Jr. Day began on November 2, 1983

On November 2, 1983 the 98th United States Congress passed a Federal Statue Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. and a Federal Holiday was enacted and signed by President Ronald Reagan.  It was first observed three (3) years later, and in 2000 observed by all 50 states.  Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is sometimes referred to as MLK DAY, King Day, and Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Day.  It is a Federal Holiday, and celebrates the Civil Rights Leader’s Life and Legacy, and one of only two days of National Service in America.

Although Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, the USA Uniform Monday Holiday Act, has Holidays celebrated on Mondays.  Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated the 3rd Monday of January each year, and every seven (7) years it is celebrated on his birthday, January 15th.
